Discover the delights of Agara in Northern Spain

ATOL-ProtectedLogo150

The northern coast isn’t typical Spain as the weather isn’t as predictable as the Mediterranean south but this area has so much more to offer. Known as Green Spain this area exudes beautiful scenery in all seasons.

The hosts for this break are Gideon from WalkWise who will be taking you out on your escorted walks and Carol Downing from Yoga Wanders who will be taking you through your twice daily Yoga sessions at the house. We may have the opportunity to take our yoga outdoors, to the beach or cliff tops.

This is a wonderful opportunity to visit a less well trod area of Spain and enjoy an All Inclusive break with the Yoga Wanders team. The rooms can all be configured as Twins, Doubles or Sole occupancies as requested.

Your Accommodation

‘Agara’ translated as Home in Sanskrit – is spacious and welcoming.  Lovingly restored by the owners, it offers modern standards but retains the Spanish character of the house. This is a chance for a relaxing break in a home away from home where you can immerse yourself in the local area and culture – you won’t find a choice of bars and nightclubs on your doorstep so if you want a party you’ll have to do it in the house!

There are twelve bedrooms and eight bathrooms; four rooms have bathrooms en suite and the rest share the remaining four. There is a supplement for an en suite room.

All rooms will accommodate 2 people but we can use them for sole occupancy for a daily supplement.

Food and Meals

Included in your trip is a continental breakfast, light lunches (available if we are at the property or a picnic lunch if on a walk or cycle ride) and evening meal every day. The evening meal takes advantage of season, it’s all home cooked and definitely plentiful.    Also, there will be complimentary tea/coffee available throughout the day for you to help yourself to.

Locally sourced spring water will be available in the house so you won’t need to worry about getting bottled water unless you really want to. Finally local wine, beer and spirits will be available between 6-12pm every day (we will ask your favourite tipple before you travel to make sure we are well stocked!); these drinks will also be available at other times for a small charge and premium brands will also be available at any time for a charge.

Impressive Walking

This enchanting area is located in Cantabria in what’s often referred to as ‘green Spain’ due to its unique aspect facing toward the Atlantic coast.  Within a short drive we can be on the stunning coastline with beautiful beaches, sheltered coves and low cliff top paths.  There are long meandering river valleys dotted with ancient deciduous woodlands and picturesque villages above which the open foothills reach up to the high limestone plateau. There are also some stunning cascades and tranquil stream and rivers flowing through the landscape, a subline backdrop for the walks in this special hidden corner of Spain.

To start the week we plan to stay relatively local and nip east around to the tiny hamlet of Viana.  Starting out along a gently rising forest track we’ll travel along the high ridge that runs behind the house.  This beautiful ridge provides a fantastic panorama over the local area and is a great initiation in the area.

Days on the coast

By contrast we will also have two days on the coast.  We have to be a little flexible with the days as we definitely need the tides to be out!  It’s about a 40 minute drive down to the coast, and what an amazing coastline it is too, with subline sandy beaches, rocky coves, sheltered bays and some delightful coastal villages and stunning coastline. It’s a real treat and there is a lovely bar perched on the headland which we are sure to visit.  Then our final destination is the beautiful San Vicente de la Barquera with its many arched bridge, idyllic bay and inlets and fantastic bars and cafes.

Returning to the interior, we have the National Park of Saja-Besaya, which we also intend to visit.  Once again there are magnificent open ridges, fine old woodlands, little refugios and open vistas that extend all the way to the sea.  Then there is a superb, picturesque road trip which lifts us high onto a fine open plateau situated at over 4,000ft, why walk when the minibus can take the strain!  Here there are fine beach forests, a maze of tumbling streams and a myriad of trails that wend their way around the high open plateau, and where herds of horses, cows and wild deer graze the lofty heights.

WalkWise UK

WalkWise UK will provide a professional and knowledgeable walking guide for the week.  The days walks are planned to fit in around and compliment the yoga. Usually we will be out for around 6-7 hours during which we may walk up to 10 miles, however as usual we will have the option to curtail the walk at regular intervals, as the walking program is flexible, and can be tailored to the group’s needs. All walks are weather dependent and it may be adapted to fit in with local events.

We will use small minibuses to access the walks.

Things to do in Agara

The area is a mecca for walking and cycling. The house has a number of bikes (enough that you should be able to find one that suits you) and helmets but you are welcome to bring your own equipment and even your bike.  In this case you will need your own transport from the airport and will need to let us know in advance so we can book space on the flight, and there will be extra cost. If you want to walk there will be a number of self-guided routes available but you will need boots and all other sensible equipment for a day’s walking in changeable weather.

Further afield, you can head for the coast where there are some stunning beaches. There is the natural park of Oyambre with the villages of Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera 20 minute drive away. Comillas is famous for its huge university buildings built on the cliff and for its “Capricho de Gaudi” (a building built by the famous architect Antonio Gaudi who built mostly in Barcelona). San Vicente is a great place to sample fish at one of the many restaurants on the quay. There are also street markets to visit in both towns. Further afield Santander is 50 minutes away by car with its many beaches, restaurants and galleries.
